the quest is the quest

I seek a plug for the bathtub drain. This seemed an easy errand, and I simply tacked "plug" onto the grocery list. Four stores later, I'm still looking.

I've discovered all sorts of really neat bathroom gadgets along the way through: special holders, designed to hold one toothbrush or one razor, a day-glo blue plexiglass toilet seat cover (very futuristic), all sorts of different baskets and bins to hold soap, contact supplies, bathroom cleaning agents, and magazines.

It's excitment enough to make me want to redecorate the bathroom, but still wouldn't solve the plug problem.

You should be able to find one of the two following items at any hardware store in the plumbing department:

1) A flat round plastic cover designed to rest over the drain in the tub. The cover is about 2" in diameter and maybe 1/32" thick, and you simply rest it on top of the drain opening. The weight of the water keeps it on top of the drain opening and keeps it from slipping, and you simply lift the cover and put it aside when you drain the water. Not a pretty solution, but also a very cheap solution. If you can't find one, e-mail me, I will find one for you and mail it to you.

2) A new drain kit. This is really one of the easiest repairs in a home, depending on how old your plumbing is. You can buy the whole latch, weight and drain plug assembly for about 20 bucks. this kit is designed to replace the drain assembly behind the tub, if that is your problem here. This only gets tricky if you have to replace the actual drain...then you need to know a bit about plumbing.

Ask at any Menards or Lowes, etc., ask someone who looks like they know what they are doing, not some 16 year old kid who can't tell the difference between a screwdriver and a hammer.

You might try Bed, Bath, and Beyond; they tend to have more plastic solutions... in other words, they actually had a cover for the drain so it wouldn't get clogged with hair.
