Yah, well, since when do our politicians consider past history or thought, presidential or otherwise.
Most current leaders are examples of that saying , "those who don't heed the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them".
It is very easy to say that you will rule or think a certain way during confirmation hearings...once justices reach the bench, their colors often change. Just ask DDE and the Republicans, who thought that Earl Warren was a staunch conservative, they gave him the justice position in exchange for carrying California for DDE...he ended up being pretty liberal and changed the court dramatically.
