Tricky - I tend to be fiercely loyal beyond the point of reason or rationality, whether it be people, places, things ("so I unpacked my adjectives") or music.
"Have Some Madeira, M'Dear"

by the Limelighters struck me as very funny as a kid. As an adult, I realized that it is, technically, about date rape, hence much less funny.
Interesting how much the world has changed - in the sixties, a group that encouraged brotherhood, etc. got laughs with a song like this. As a history teacher, I get the humor, but it's a lot more creepy now.

I almost used that for one of my songs. I ended up writing about the Merrry Minuet instead. But we listened to a lot of LImelighters and my dad did hilarious voices when he sang along with Have Some Madeira. I don't think I could ever hate it because it reminds me of some of the best parts of being a part of my family.
I feel this way about much of the songs from the 50's - esp the Big Bopper which is just him trolling for girls. He sounds like a dirty old man. Ick.
Thanks to Jeanne's daughter, I can no longer listen to Baby It's Cold Outside without thinking it, too, is a date rape song :P
